Public Performance Music Licensing

Most people never stop to think about it, but nearly everywhere you go there is music — sometimes just in the background — other times as the primary entertainment medium in whatever location you happen to be visiting. Less known is that, in nearly all cases, someone is paying for the rights to play that music in a public venue. But who do they pay and how does the money get distributed?
